Matthew Walker & Katherine (Katie) Baker: Class of 2003 & 2005

Matthew and I met the summer before his junior year of high school at marching band camp. I was an incoming freshman. We weren't in the same section in band so we didn't have much intentional interaction outside of band. He tells people now that I was the quiet girl that always held the door open for people. I developed friendships with many of the people who ran in his circle so we were always around each other but never spent much time together outside of band events. Matthew graduated and we lost touch. The summer after I graduated from high school, we ended up returning to band camp to visit with Mr. Norman on the same day. I remembered Matthew and we struck up a conversation reminiscing about our marching band days.

We eventually learned that our homes were essentially across the street from each other. One day he knocked on my door and asked if I'd like to hang out. The rest was history. We started a friendship that grew into a relationship, an engagement, and eventually marriage. We both loved marching band, thanks to Mr. Norman and his amazing program. Many of our dates were spent sitting in the stands at a band competition cheering on the DHS marching band. We even got engaged at one of their competitions. Mr. Norman was one of the first people that day to congratulate us on our engagement. We've been married for 13 years and have 3 children. We still attend band camp in the summer and get to competitions when we can. If it weren't for our time in the DHS marching band, I wouldn't have met and married my best friend!
